While what you write about the piston rings is true, turbos still pose a unique challenge for motor oils.
The latest Honda Accords and Civics are running high compression ratios up around 10.0, sometimes 10.6:1, on regular gas, on regular non-synthetic oil, and they're not known to sludge up.
I think other factors are at play here such as the quality of the piston rings. Some Audis have piston rings which are a bit loose when cold. The last Honda Prelude had faulty piston rings... and many Saturns have piston ring problems too.
No piston ring problems with SAABs, but they're turbocharged. There have been several reports of SAAB turbo engines sludging up while using the SAAB semi-syn/syn-blend 5W-30.
From the oil analysis reports I've seen, SAAB turbos beat up the engine oil pretty badly, much worse than normally aspirated engines.
The higher-compression Honda Civic engines, however, seem to be very easy on oil...
