Can't give much input about how the car will depreciate over time. It would take a fortune teller to do that. However, being the smart person you are and letting someone else take the big initial hit in depression means you can expect the car to lose less value over the years after this point. I intend to drive mine into the ground, so the amount it depreciates isn't a concern of mine.
As far as mileage, are you looking at 40k-50k for the slight cost savings? Off-lease 9-5's can pretty easily be had with less than 30k on them. Definitely get a certified one.
As far as which engine? Well, I was told the 4 is a bit more reliable than the 6. However, my personal preference is the 6 and that's what we got. The 6 seemed smoother and quieter than the 4 and of course, it's faster. The biggest thing I didn't like about the 4, is with the AC on, occassionally I'd go to accellerate, and the car would hesitate for a couple seconds. Turbo-lag, maybe, but I've heard of other people experiencing the same problem.
Can't give you pricing for east coast, but here in the Chicago-area I paid just under $21800 for a 2000 SE wagon, 28K, certified, with the ventilated seats and it looks as good as new.
