just a brief message to say that aero academy was absolutely worth it, and i paid the $1,350. the big surprise were : the wagon handled at least as well as the sedan and the car does fine with the auto in lieu of the 5-speed manual. i may be thinking about a new body and tranny on my next purchase.
for the most part, the description <a href="http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/9-5/index.html?bID=51704">here</a> is a great summary of the course.
the instruction staff is top-notch (and i've been an instructor in a graduate school for 8 years so i'm well aware of good and bad teachers) and willing to put up with every last question i threw at them.
some observations:
for a typical 24 student class (there were only 8 of us this time), 12 tires will need to be replaced at the end.
no brakes have had to be replaced yet. no major repairs to these cars, which makes me feel that they're really good machines given the way we drove them.
make sure you get brian g., the instructor from trinidad (or tobago?) w/ 38 years experience riding w/ you on the skid pad. it's worth the price of admission for that alone.
anybody who thinks they'd like to use their own car on a course like this is nuts, or very rich.
the fantastic lane change exercise we do would flip most SUV's and minivans.
by the end of the course, if you listened and you keep the instructions in mind for the rest of your life, you should have NO EXCUSE for ever crashing, barring the odd deer or moose suiciding into your car. and even then...
i feel much more confident on the road now, albeit also more wary of other drivers since i know the majority are ready to spill "the fam" out the door of the minivan at any time without warning (typical los angeles minivan driver: RAIN! my god! immediately steps on brakes hard and turns, spinning minivan, flipping it and spilling "the fam" on the freeway). then again, i can just pull a lightening fast lane change to get out of the way.
verdict: highly recommended.
