"All manual transmission cars sold in the USA must have an upshift light."
I don't think so? The stick BMWs I've driven do not have upshift lights. I personally hate the upshift light, and I'm glad my dealer turned it off before I even took delivery of my 9-5.
Worse fuel economy?! Bunk! I routinely beat the EPA estimates all the time. Who's in charge of testing down there? Let ME test... my SAAB 9-5 beats the fuel economy of any midsize-to-large sized car out there, 35 MPG highway! (EPA's estimate is only 31)
That shift light is wrong, and it's possible that shifting too soon results in worse mileage. (The SAAB turbo 4 engine doesn't like to accelerate too far below 1,500 rpm; I think efficiency is enhanced if you land your upshifts closer to the torque peak at 1,900)
