my wife and i love saabs (have had some saab for 20 yrs) and i love bmw's (i've owned 3 e39's) so feel i'm qualified to comment. also i drove the new e60 530 sport last week. i agree that the new e60 is overpriced (the euro is hurting bmw badly i think) given the competition from both above and below. that being said the car (with sport package) does have amazing driving dynamics, right up there with my m5. other than that i'm not that impressed--some of the cheap materials used inside, weird i-drive, controversial styling, etc). you always pay a premium for bmw engineering but now you are paying a much higher premium. i think the 530's will be discounted a decent amount....the saab is less sporting in nature, doesn't handle as well (but not badly), is better in bad climates, will tend to be less reliable (e39's are pretty bulletproof, who knows with e60) and doesn't have the 'bmw attitude' associated with it. oh, and it costs a lot less....
seems like a fair tradeoff until you factor in the new $5-7k higher price tag on the e60. my wife would never own a bmw because of the yuppie factor but we're looking at new saab's to replace our 9-5 that we may give to our daughter....
