we own a 2000 9-5 Fisher wagon and really like it for what it is: a very nice looking and practical wagon that we got for a great price($18k and 52k mi). we looked at a 2000 528i wagon but it was probably $8 to $10k more money if we wanted a clean one. to me, the bmw is a better handling car by a long shot and it's also more refined in the engine/transmission. i'm not sure i will ever get totally comfortable w/ the saab handling(it leans too much), too much dive when braking, and also too much vibration at idle(we have the 4sp auto). so why did we buy the saab? one of the main reasons is what many womany say, they'd rather avoid the yuppie factor and would prefer not to drive a bimmer. as for the cost, although it's more money, i think overall it's kind of a wash b/c in 3 yrs, the bimmer will likely be worth $5 to $7k more...so the add'l cost is not as high as it would appear at the outset. just my $.02 worth.
