Dodge has a nice oil plug Posted by Joe [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Oil drain plug with o ring, Aero'ed, Fri, 17 Oct 2003 10:16:25 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The oil plug that came on my Dodge truck is a thing of beauty. It has a magnet and a molded on rubber seal/washer. The seal is such that when you tighten it up it goes to metal to metal contact when the seal has the right compression. It is leak and idiot proof.
This wonder plug is made by Chicago Rawhide, who is a big OEM supplier. I called them and asked if they had one for the piece of crap on the 9-5. No such luck, they only service the OEM market. I asked if they had larger plugs that I could modify. No luck eaither. The biggest they had was a 1/2" thread and the 9-5 has a 14mm thread.
They guy who designed the 9-5 drain plug must have a crack problem. Aluminum pan, steel plug and copper washer. The dissimalar metals need to be tightened a lot to keep tight ofver temperature. The copper gasket is not very soft so it leaks unless it is very tight. If the plug is real tight you strip off the 13mm hex when you go to drain the oil...
Undaunted, I went to the auto store and got a replacement plug with a nylon gasket and 5/8" hex (still 14mm thread). This worked fine (no leaks and easy to take off) until I went in for my 20k service. The Saab mechanic put back the OEM plug and charged me! Now I have a leak.
Drive Safe,
Joe
