Popularity is resale and you've hit the nail on the head for an individual vehicle with a stronger resale. My research doesn't quite support a $10k difference in resale between an MDX and a 9-5 SportWagon, I get $6-7k, but you're correct that's a significant amount. That is somewhat offset by the higher price of the MDX too. You can still get a Saab SportWagon for $33.5K. MDX's are real easy to get up over $40k.
I also don't get a $4k difference for the Volvo, they come up pretty close, the Volvo has a modest $1k edge. Which is why I continue to maintain that Saab resale is average. You've cited one example of significantly better resale which I will concede. You didn't mention more comparable cars, wagons from BMW, Audi, Mercedes. Acura sedans for example are pretty average too.
I guess I just bristle a little when people use the horrible word for resale with Saabs. I don't find Saabs to be in that category. I work at a dealer that also sells Cadillac, Buick, GMC and Hummer. The Cads and Buicks might qualify for the "h" designation, especially with all the Cad and Buicks in rental and fleet service. Sport utes in general, Yukons and Suburbans for example are average+. They do have in common with Saab huge discounts and incentives. Right now you can get $11,500 off on an 03 Yukon XL which makes caculating resale interesting. Do you measure it by a percentage of the original sticker or the actual transaction price?
Anyway with regards to leasing vs, buying, if someone is concerened with resale, a lease makes even more sense.
