Maybe if its a buddy's car that you helped him modify and you know how it was done, how it was driven and how it works it might be OK to buy it, but I'd be suspicious about buying a modified car from a stranger. There's an awful lot of stuff you can screw up these days on a car (I'm sure you had your issues to work out when you did your car right?) and somebody might just be trying to dump their troubles and start over. Sure enough, there are people who did a proper job and have a strong running car, but like the other respondents said, its for the love of the car- if you want an investment you shouldn't be looking at cars.
Certain modifications to a house, like an upscale kitchen will almost bring back the money dollar for dollar, but a granite countertop won't leave you stranded on the highway. (unless of course it flies off a truck and hits your car!)
