The Big 3 pretty much abandoned the car market and concentrated on SUVs and trucks.

All the recent rental cars I've driven (Ford, Chevy, etc) have been pretty awful--but the rental Jeep Liberty SUV I drove handled WAY better than the Taurus, go figure?!

The last-generation and current-generation Accords might be a bit boring but they do drive quite well--there's a feeling of sophistication in the suspension that imparts the impression that the car costs way more than it actually does. Honda's double-wishbone suspension is very good.

An Accord will easily do 80-90 mph all day, while a typical Ford or Buick feels downright truckish and a bit dangerous at speeds above 70.

The absolute worst rental I've had in recent memory was an '02 Ford Escort; damn, it was worse than the '85 Chevy Cavalier we used to have. Escorts used to be pretty decent, too, circa 1991, when they used Mazda 323 underpinnings and powertrain. What the heck happened?

It's been a pretty sad state of affairs--Ford canceled the Taurus recently, admitting that it's so far behind the Accord and Camry that it's basically hopeless. Let's see what they come up with next.

What happened with the Malibu? I thought it might be halfway decent since it shares some underpinnings with the 9-3SS, doesn't it?
