That depends. The head gasket is definatly the easier job but I would consider pulling the upper motor mount(you'll have to jack up the engine slightly to get it off) Cleaning the head to front cover area well with brake cleaner and trying to work some silicone sealant into the joint between the head and the front cover. I have never done this on a Saab but have had good luck on getting large diesels to quit leaking until I could get back to it.
The heater box isn't really technically dificult but it is an erector set of biblical proportions. If you memory is great or if you are really organized you will do fine. I would not attempt this without the factory printouts.
If you do the head gasket we use Toyota FIPG(pronounced fipig or formed in place gasket) around the timing chain gallery on both sides of the head gasket. Also scratch precise marks for the cam alignment. They never line up perfectly on the factory marks and it will help you to have exact marks.
