It's certainly not acceptable, just from the standpoint of: here's a guy with the heads off your engine and he can't control himself? Granted, to do a timing cover the entire powertrain comes out, so at a dealer, you probably had the 'B' mechanic yank it and the 'A' guy do the delicate stuff. Still no excuse....I can understand a single slip and a gouge but lots of marks isn't right.
They should at minimum: a) touch up anything for rust concerns b) pony up a fat gift certificate to the parts department for fun stuff and c) offer a full explanation of why their mechanics are sloppier than you've seen in 7 cars
Just decide what'll make it right for you. A good service manager with a bad mechanic will be asking you what will make it right. Then you'll see what the dealership is made of.
