Sport mode only affects the car during acceleration, and not steady state cruise speeds. Also, the altered shift points on hard acceleration mean that you are basically putting the polyethelene to the polyester and pretty much flooring it, so when doing that, the drop in mileage ought to be obvious. If you are in sport, but just using moderate throttle openings you are not likely shifting at a higher RPM than if you were in normal mode. Personally,I think thatthe car should have just been built in a permanent sport mode,eliminate the button and you would have one less control to worry about. Marketing gives us the choice of sport or normal,but in my mind, normal is just not needed.
