like you I have a 1995 9000 Aero (5-speed) got wife a 2003 9-5 Aero (auto) that replaced a 9000 as well. The base 9-5s are, well, base models, much like the 9K LPT. The earlier 9-5s are a bit soft all around. The 9K in Aero form is one of the hardest sprung sedan one can ever drive so anything else is soft. They are two totally different cars only the name is the same, even the 9-5 Aero is quite different from the 9K Aero as I often drive both cars back to back.

Yes, the 2000 9-5 can be upgraded, Saab actually has a 200HP computer for the 2000. You can also go aftermarket as posted by Dean. The suspension can be upgraded as well.

Other than the 9-5 base model with the 2.3 LPT, there is the 9-5 V6 and the Aero. I would imagine you want the 2.3L engine instead of the V6 which is being phased out in 2004. The difference between the 9-5 LPT and 9-5 Aero is similar to the 9K LPT and 9K Aero with the Aero having a more powerful engine, better suspension, and better audio system. However, the 9-5 Aero didn't get Aero seats until 2002.

However, I agree with Stephen, if you thinking of doing the upgrade route, you may just as well get a 2000 Aero. I think you would be happier in the long run.

As for trouble spots for a 9-5, you may want to search the archive. In general, the average 9-5 has fewer problems than with an average 9000; but as always, you may get a better than average one or you may end up with something akin to a lemon.

A pre-owned 9-5 is inexpensive as many are coming off lease. They are safe cars as well.
