How mechanical are you? You aren't missing anything, the used car market is really down. You can find a used aero for reasonable money now, due to Saab's huge depreciation curve. When I was looking almost 2 years ago, I couldn't find one for under $27K. So first choice now is probably an aero.

FWIW, I bought a '99 9-5 for about $13K w/84K on it at that time, it's now probably worth about $8500-9000 w/114K miles on it. And that's only because it's had ALL the maintenance since then: brake pads & rotors, Remus exhaust, serpentine belt and idler pulleys, SID change, 0063 transmission fluid, boost gauge, '01 Aero springs and '03 Aero sway bars, and bilstien shocks and struts. Even then, it was much cheaper to upgrade than to buy the aero at that time.

There were across the board improvements to the 9-5 line in 2002, and the aero suspension in particular improved then. If you are thinking of upgrading, you might want to try to swing a MY'02 up, there were many improvements to that year's chassis AND it will have your boost gauge!

The MY'99, '00, and '01 will all take the aero suspensions from '00 / '01, but the later improved '02 on springs don't fit. The '02/'03 Aero sway bars are a bit beefier and will fit all the way back. The front one is a bit of a PIA, the rear a piece of cake.

IIRC, Springs are about $200, and sway bars about $175 whether you go with Saab OEM or the eibach route, either way you will have a car that handles like an 9-5 Aero if you put in the shocks and struts.

The ecu is a plug in change, it takes about 25 minutes to do. If you are looking at MY '00, Saab has an ecu upgrade for that year only; otherwise you need to look aftermarket.

The early 9-5's had no boost gauge. Several of us have added them. It took me a few hours to figure out how to get mine in; but I like it better than the oem gauges.

The earliest 9-5's (like mine) had many more teething problems. DO a search on the board for the upgrades, and there are some good postings on what to look for. I'd watch the early 9-5's manuals for synchro issues. Other than that, it is the typical SID missing pixels, blue smoke at startup, etc.
