During the product launch of the 2002 9-5 range, I was (unfortunately) able to perform a carefully controlled mileage test (creeping along at 60 mph on a "donut" spare). Switching from 87 octane (used throughout most of the couple thousand mile NINES use test) to 93 octane (leaving it full of the "good stuff" for the benefit of the next journalist) produced an instant 3 mpg (10%) increase. Goldberger's rule of thumb ... if premium is less than 10% more expensive, it's more economical. One of our local chains sells premium for the price of mid-grade on Tuesdays...
But speaking of "high octane", what Mike didn't clearly state is that in mountain states where "85" is the "regular" grade, you MUST upgrade to at least 87 octane. The 9-5 and '00 on 9-3s (and all Viggens) are set for "absolute" pressure, and they compensate for high altitudes by increasing the boost pressure.
