The only difference between the sport and the HD is the length of the shock; the valving, bushings, etc. are identical.
I put in the OEM aero '01/'00 springs and put Bilstein HD's on front and sports on the rear just due to availability issues, but was told would be fine by Bilstein. Had no problems with fit. The aero spring is shorter than linear, but not enough to require the sport's shorter length. I don't have the exact measurements at hand, but the oem aero drop fits the HD line fine, and that's what I would have chosen first. If you think you might go to a lowering spring like Eibach down the line, you might as well go with the sport now.
I don't find the ride particulary harsher than the oem '00 or '01 Aero, but I do think the control is better. It is a bit firmer, but I did upgrade to the JJ '02 Aero sway bars at the same time, so part of the controll is undoubtably related to that. I prefer my results to any base '00 or '01 aero I've driven.
As an aside, we recently were gifted a Volvo 850 turbo automatic. My 9-5 has a much nicer ride and handles better to boot. By a lot on both categories. Its nice that you don't have to feel like a buckboard to get decent handling. I wish the base 9-5 had more oomph like the volvo, though! Just had the Volvo to the dealer, and they mentioned that the 850's are known to ride hard, but sure do handle well. I just cringed...
As far as pricing, do a search; someone gave me the best source I've found. FWIW, eEuroparts, a site sponsor, will (and did) match the best price I found, and their service was excellent.
