When I was in the market for a new car (well, used but new for me), I boiled it down to the A6 Avant and the SE wagon. The A4 is way too small. But for comparison sake, I think the engine in the A4 3.0 is the same as in the A6 avant.
The Audi was definitely a smoother, quieter, slightly more solid ride, and the interior seemed top notch. Plus, the quatro was a nice attraction.
The Saab was definitely faster and more nimble. Interior passenger space was about equal to the A6, but the trunk may have been a tad narrower. Overall, I liked the Saab better inside and out. Plus, the one in particular that I got has the ventilated seats. Very nice feature if you've got it.
Although a lot of people including our mechanic said the Audis were good cars, the research I did proved that maintenance on the Audis would have been more expensive. And the Audi I was looking at would've been about $4K more than I paided for the Saab. Although you don't see too many Avants on the road, you see even less Saab wagons. It's fun being in the minority.
