First of all, I am a Saab die hard and have been since I purchased my first Saab, '89 9000 in 1995. Since then I have also owned a '94 9000 Aero.

However, it troubles me that Saab has not been able to fix the troublesome DI cassette in at least 12 years of it's existence. In fact the reliability has gotten a lot worse on the 9-5, based on people having failures in the 20K to 40K miles of use. At least on the 9000's they would generaly work until they reached 100K miles. This one I find particurlarly troublesome since it will leave you stranded with no notice. True the environment is not the best for electronics, but there is no reason that they can not design it to be reliable with today's technology.

Other areas of concern are the blue smoke at startup (which seems to be caused by either a bad seal on the turbo or restrictions in the PCV hoses) and the SID going bad.


It is this type of continuing problems that will give Saab a "black eye" for an otherwise great car.

I guess on the plus side, it's things like these that make Saab's depreciate so much and make buying a used Saab a good deal. (As long as you keep it and run into the ground)
