I don't want to diminish the impact that a failed DI Cassette have have on an owner if it fails in heavy traffic, however; my original unit performed flawlessly for 80,000 miles. At that point I purchased a replacement unit, installed the new DI (2 minute job), and now carry my original unit in the trunk as a spare. Bad news always seems to travel faster than good. Some posters have had the misfortune of early failure, others have never had a failure in hundreds of thousands of miles of Saab ownership/driving.
The SID did fail on my car. I atempted the D-I-Y repair (under $1 if it works), botched the job, purchased a new unit and installed it myself. SID failure involves pixels in the informaiton display that over time begin to not operate. Failure is normally progressive over a long time, and is an irritation not a critical issue.
No way to tell if a DI or SID has been replaced by looking at it. If done by a Dealer it might show up in the car's service history. You may be reassured to hear the DI has not been an issue with the V6 enginer. The V6 uses two DI's, they sit on a slightly cooler part of the engine - meaning longer life for the electronics. If one fails, the other will keep the engine running - or so we have heard. Almost no reports of a DI failure on the V6.
