Turbos will last a lot longer than 50K miles. The LPT on my Volvo is at 140K and still original, still going strong. The LPT on my 9-5 is now at 93K and still original, still going strong. The really ancient turbo in my '82 900T (no water cooling) went 140K before dying in -20F weather.

The key to long turbo life is:
- changing the oil regularly, and keeping it topped up
- letting the car warm up when starting it cold so that the oil can flow freely
- not shutting the engine off immediately after a high RPM run. This allows the turbo to spin down from its 40,000 RPM peak, so that it is not spinning fast when the engine is shut off (and the oil flow stops).

Turbo cars are different beasts, and should be treated well. Look at a VW board to see all the folks with 1.8T's who don't treat them well. They are blowing turbos left and right.
