I have a slightly different perspective on this failure issue. Failures are the life blood of my career. There are extremely successful companies out there with a good reputation for reliability that I, at times, had to question because my job is to analyze failures and we bought parts from that company. I worked for a company that had industry leading reliability and I saw neumerous failures every day, of course that's my job. What I never saw was the extraordinary numbers or reliable components that lived long past their expected life span, they didn't need any analysis.
For the most part when I post on this board it's with a specific how do I do a repair type of question. So you don't see me here saying, "Hey, my car still drives great". Well it did and so I bought another one. I put 92K miles on my 9000 that I bought with 77K on it. It left me stranded once, turned out to be the fuel pump. The DI cassette is still running strong on that car with 169K miles on it. So is the ZF transmission I was prepared to watch die. The turbo was still running strong, but I thought Saab turbos were suposed to be amoungst the best. I did replace the front axles on that car at around 150K but I didn't think that was out of line. Should CV joints hold out longer?
Now I hope for the same if not better reliability out of the 2000 9-5 wagon I just bought. As for the SID display the first picture I saw I knew it was a connection issue and guessed it was probably an elastomer connection. The repair pages I've looked at confirm it's a elastomer connector issue at the dircuit board. It would probably be better as an edge connector to the PC board. But Saab doesn't make the display. The manufacturer of the display probably has to go through expensive and lengthy qualifications to make any changes to the product it sells. In the mean time they are trying to qualify new technologies. There could even be a fix in the works, but reliability testing by nature takes a lot of time. New products and fixes to old ones don't just get introduced overnight.
That said I hope the new SID in my car lasts a long time.
Geoff
My point is when all you see are the failures it looks like the world is going to fall apart so you have to remember to put things in perspective.
