Saabs have an interlock that prevent you from cranking the engine a second time until you turn the ignition off. This is to prevent you from engaging the starter motor when the engine is running. Not good for the starter gear or ring gears. Sounds nasty too.

Example: If you started the engine and it sputtered out, turning the key to crank again would do nothing at all. You need to turn the key the other direction one position, then back to ignition on, then crank the engine. Part of what is going on related to this. When you turn to the crank engine position, things like the head lamps are cut out... thats normal. I don't know if you turn the key when cranking is interlocked out, whether that position would still cut the head lamps or not. You would have to check that to see.
