The "new" Dexron-III has a huge affinity for water. Whereas in the past a mixture of Dexron-II transmission oil and water would separate due to gravity (density) relatively quickly, the different additive packages in Dexron-III prevent this from happening.
Dexron-III loves water so much that even high-speed centrifuges have difficulty splitting the two fluids apart!
Change your automatic transmission oil regularly!!! You don't want water in your transmission.
The individuals who advocate doing a "flush and fill" versus the "drain and top-off" are not extremisits. I don't have the tools to flush the tranny, but I drain and top-off more frequently than the manual specifies.
I don't know about the most recent fluid, the Exxon T-4(?) used in the new 5-speed autos.
