It's 60/40 skill/equipment. Maybe more about skill. So few people seem to know what AWD does and does not do for them...considering how many of them I see go off the road in bad conditions. It won't do anything for you on ice, and it won't stop you any shorter on surface. But people seem to buy Audi and Subaru's implication that technology HAS beaten mother nature and that's wrong wrong wrong.
Having done Reno to Tahoe in a blizzard, I can tell you nothing beats a big-ass 4WD with a real low range and winter tires.
HOWEVER...I said beats...Smart-Ass "I Went to School In Rochester" behind us rented a Camry and got there about 25 minutes later. They closed the road about 30 minutes after that. Advantage: skill.
That said, go for the Tooregg V8. If you're gonna do it, do it right ;)
