I think that the point was that higher octane will affect power production when on boost, but that it does not matter when on off boost cruising conditions. The turbo engines are not high compression and don't need high octane when simply rolling down the road. The amount of fuel used accelerating on a long expressway trip is small in proportion. So effects of octane when on boost are not going to effect the MPGs over a long distance. When looking purely highway MPGs, on can reset the SID when at speed and get a representative figure quite quickly. Actual long trips tend to result in similar numbers.
