now carry the original one as a spare. Sort of like using an old tire as a full sized spare.
Electronic componenets adhere to what is commonly called the "bath tub curve" when plotting failure rate versus age. Initial high infancy failure which drops very quickly, very low failure rate through most of its life, then an exponentially climbing rate of failure in late life. Burn-in at the electronics factory is designed to catch the infancy failures, Saab warranty will compensate for the few early failures that leave the electronics factory, then owners should have no problems for a long time.
Was replacement at 80,000 miles too early? Maybe, but it is now one thing I don't have to worry about. The damn idler pulleys will be next for a pre-emptive replacement.
