Your design comparison on 2 less cylinders, 1 less turbo, etc...is misleading. Audi used 2 very low pressure turbos to increase power without dealing without inducing excessive turbo lag. If you put two of the same pressure turbos as on the Aero on the S4 you would be making excessive HP (and also probably have created a hand grenade of an engine). The S4 engine is far superior in terms of smoothness and low end TQ to the Aero. The Aero engine is effective but it is pretty basic...small low tech 4 cylinder, big turbo = good power.
Engine design is all about compromise. From small NA 4 cylinders to twin turbo 8 cylinders...they all have their benefits and drawbacks in terms of performance, smoothness, economy, etc. Comparing peak power to peak power is somewhat of a short sighted endeavor.
Regards,
PLC
