if it's not one thing.... coolant issue

We live in metro Detroit, where it's currently snowing like crazy. I just talked to my husband, who is on his way home from Ann Arbor. He said the coolant message came on the SID, and when he stopped to check it, there was no coolant visible, and the cap on the reservoir was not really on. Of course we don't have a jug of special Saab coolant in the car. I told him to call the Saab roadside service. This is our only car at the moment, as our VW is currently out of commission. Any advice on what he should do? Quickly? I thinking the car shouldn't be driven if he doesn't know how much coolant is in it.
Thanks in advance.
