Dean, so many variables involved in these failures, climate, variations in component durability, number of heat/cooling cycles, peak engine operating temps, and so on.
But my personal hunch is that the highest temperatures under the hood overall are experienced after shut down in the summer, and hence may be the highest heat related stress exerted on the DI, sufficient to begin degradation of the electronic components. Seems to me that engine compartment airflow and cooling is pretty efficient when the vehicle is moving, but when stopped the heat is for the most part trapped under the hood and percolates upward into the DI. I don't understand why the cooling fan does not run more often/longer after hot shutdown, it certainly did on my old 9000, where it was controlled by the old style bimetallic thermostat, not sure if it is on a pre programmed timed cycle on the 9-5.
All in all though, questionable decision to use a technology not exactly known for stellar reliabilty, even when it is mounted somewhere other than the top of a hot engine.
