What part of the alternator is bad? It sounds like the alternator is too new to have had a mechanical failure. More likely it's the regulator. I remember my old VW Jetta used an external regulator design, which allowed one to just replace the regulator portion if it died. I once did just that - two screws & about a minute worth of labor. No need to take any belts off or anything. I've never looked at the Saab alternator, but maybe it's worth the effort to try and replace this one part if it's possible. FWIW, I believe most mfgs don't use this external regulator design anymore - everything's sealed inside.
