I recommend using a good engine flush first, such as made by AMSOIL or BG.
If you don't, or won't, use a flush, then go ahead and change oil and filter. Pull the dipstick regularly. If you note a sudden increase in oil consumption after a few thousand miles, change the oil filter and top off.
In over 25 years of using and selling AMSOIL, I can only recall 2 or 3 cars which developed leaks. And that was quite a few years back. The cars had not been well maintained before changing. Today's non-synthetic oils are much better than they were 20 years ago, and a decently maintained engine should have no problems.
The shop dropped AMSOIL into my 1988 9000Turbo before I bought it, 87K miles. Did not use a flush. I changed oil after a year, still fine.
