The V-6 engine uses a timing belt, the I-4 engine uses a timing chain. The V-6 timing belt should be changed at the 60,000 miles service. The I-4 timing chain requires no periodic service and should last for hundreds of thousands of miles.
The I-4 serpentine belt drives the engine accessories. Loss of this belt will result in loss of alternator current, loss of power steering, and loss of water pump. Engine damage is only possible if car is allowed to run until it overheats. You will have bright warning lights on the dash and very stiff steering to alert you something is amiss.
The V-6 timing belt failure can/will allow the engine valves to strike the pistons, resulting in bent or broken valves, broken piston crowns, etc. Very expensive stuff.
