the timing belt interval to the extent of your conscience and future plans for the car. Cadillac and Saturn specifiy a 75K change interval, iirc, and Saab will pay for the first one under 100,000 miles. What you are trying to achieve is never having to open the timing cover again during your ownership of the car (or, if you plan to keep it as long as possible, once more instead of twice more, etc.). As for your question, with the water pump driven off the cam belt, a siezed pump can result in a ruined engine if it snaps the timing belt. That's reason enough to change the pump with the cam belt.
