It didn't have to be sold to get damaged...it could have fallen off a truck, gotten hit in the lot, rolled off into a drainage ditch, etc. It's only a possibility, but I have heard of things like this happening (not to a Saab yet). It also wouldn't add to the odo reading. They fix it and still sell it as new.
If that's the case, it fits the facts: the last thing they want is Saab finding out and chewing them out (and making them pay for the repairs out of pocket). Delay, delay. You also said 'rust-out', that sounds like a pretty clear claim under the perforation warranty.
Take it to a good bodyshop, they will be able to tell if it's been worked on. If so, call Saab USA and tell them that.
