Sometimes the faded look is a build up of wax residue. If you wax your car on a regular basis and occasionally hit the trim, it will leave a whitish residue. For this, I use sanford magic rub erasers (white artgum type erasers you can find in any office supply store). Rub the trim and you would be surprised at how black the trim returns to. Anything foreign in the nooks and crannys of the plastic will attach itself to the eraser and then you just blow or wipe off the shavings. Then you can hit it up with forever black and it will look new again.
