The recommendation is correct, but based on false premise. If you go back to the non-synthetic, the negative consequences will include:
increased engine wear, shorter oil drains, hotter engine temperatures, harder cold weather starts, less protection in case of emergency.
But the engine will continue to run fine, as long as the oil is changed before it breaks down/becomes contaminated.
