question about starting problems

As one of the people who recently have had problems with my 9-5 not starting, I have some general questions. I've read the posts about the weak battery, solenoid, crankshaft position sensor, etc.
If the dash lights, radio, etc all work but the car doesn't turn over at all- no noise at all from under the hood, why would that point to a weak battery? I know starting the car takes a lot more juice than powering the radio, but wouldn't you expect it to turn over some? Would this be complicated by heat, such as a couple of short duration trips?
My car is dead again at work with the same problem I had a couple of weeks ago. Turn key, nothing happens except all the dash lights and radio come on. I hear a buzzing noise from the rear, which I think it probably the fuel pump working. The last time it started fine after sitting for 45 minutes, and continued to work fine for a couple of weeks. Then today it died again, and it wouldn't start even after letting it sit 90 minutes.
I'll probably find out tomorrow what it is, but I would like to understand what symptoms a weak battery has and if that might be it. The car isn't even 4 years old, its a 01 bought in Dec 00 and has 36,000 miles on it.
