Me, I was raised on FWD cars, Audi Fox, VW GTI, Civic Si, so rear wheel drive cars are an invitation to wag the back end off the road. Acura Intergras routinely whomp BMW 3's in competition. I don't find the ability to influence both ends of the car to be practical on the street, and when you introduce weather into the equation, well FWD is sooo much better.
But each to his own. I find turbo cars to be lots more fun with lots more torque (ooomph) where you drive. I would match a 220hp 9-5 Arc, the Linears you drove were only 175-185hp, against a 525 or 530 anyday, and a 250hp Aero has more torque down low than a 540 V8!
The latest 2004 5 series does have the split roll bars that level the car out and the variable ratio steering that do indeed make them handle magnificently, but a 525 so equipped is a $45K car and the Aero is $10k less than that after incentives. An Arc can be had for $15k less.
And no I-drive in a Saab. One of the beauties of a 9-5 is the simplicity of operation, without sacrificing any of the newest widgets, save for navigation.
