When I bought my spare DI, the first thing I did was install it so I would know how to do it on a dark & rainy night, if need be; Also it confirmed the unit worked. I had no problems at all, regular threaded. I did have some trouble as you mentioned and had to use a vice-gribs attached to the end of the SAAB torx driver provided in the trunk to get enough torx. Before I started turning though, I tapped the torx driver snugly into the torx screw heads to ensure it was well seated and wouldn't strip.
The very design of torx screws is intended to prevent slippage (and stripped heads). I felt a little like yourself, but eventually they broke free. Given that, I should probably check them from time to time now to ensure they don't back out by themselves
