If you add the 8% (denser summer blend gasoline) to the 3% you lose from the winter "oxygenates", that adds up to 11%, precisely the amount I've lost on the "winter blend" (at 70 mph)
Last year on a long trip in early September, I got an amazing 35 MPG at 70 mph, but a few days ago the best I could manage was 31 MPG at 70 mph (which coincidentally matches the EPA highway rating for my car exactly)
It turns out, in the Northeast, the "good stuff" doesn't get dispensed from the fuel pumps until June 1. It's available until Sept 15.
My SID's "miles per gallon" display was pleasingly accurate, but the "distance to empty" function was overly optimistic at about 1/2 tank--it said I could go 350 more miles (I'd already gone 250) for a total of 600.
I know I won't manage 600 miles on a tank at 31 MPG (18 gal tank--more like 550 miles)
All in all I'm extremely pleased with the fuel economy of my SAAB, considering it wears wide 225/45-17 sports tires, and has an engine that puts out 250 hp and 272 lb-ft of torque.
