I just moved from a 93 Passat GLX wagon to an 01 9-5 wagon. I loved the Passat, and was looking at similar cars as you have mentioned. One big thing that you should think about is: do you really need AWD and if not, why pay for it? The way I figure it, the only think AWD gives me in the winter is the ability to go faster than what my brakes can safely accomodate. Unless you live at the top of a really steep driveway, snow tires are more than sufficient.
The GLX is (I think) still the V6, yes? That will drive a lot differently than either other car. I loved my VR6 motor, and am certainly getting used to my 2.3T -- but it does take a little while. Had I not driven my father's 9-5 enough to know that I would come around, I might have gone back to another GLX. That being said, I am really glad I didn't -- because of reliability and the feel, fit and thoughfulness of the Saab.
And finally, I don't think the A4 it too overpowered. It is #3 on your list by power, but I really don't think it prohibitively wimpy.
Those are my thoughts, IM(not-so!)HO
