I'm facing the same dilemma - If you can call it that. Im replacing an 01 lpt wagon with either an 04 Aero wagon (auto) or the V70R 6-speed. I've been visiting sweedespeed.com and there are a veritable plethora of negative posts on the V70r's reliability. The main thing is the 4C suspension, but there are many other problems that these cars face which would be more than a little agrivating. The 9-5 series is not without its little quirks either, so I'm calling the reliability competition pretty much a wash.
The Saab aero in automatic form is about 6 tenths of a second quicker to 60mph than the V70r/S60r with the automatic. I have driven both the manual and auto versions of the V70r and in this series of cars, the manual is the way to go. I just recently had quite a breakthrough with th e wife, and she is allowing me to go with the manual if the V70R becomes my choice. I have also driven the 04 aero wagon (auto), and it was very nice. The paddle shift controls were very cool and allowed a high degree of control. The semiautomatic system in the saab is a very inteligent one - when in manual mode the transmission won't downshift when you gun the engine - my wifes passat tiptronic downshifts and it drives me nuts. I can't find a manual 04 aero with which to compare. The people who have driven the manual say there is very little difference in acceleration times. The manual fans will say there is more control, the auto fans will chime in with their opinion.
The suggestion someone made about the turning radius on the volvo is a good one. Its a wide one. I think if I were buying an automatic, the saab is the choice I would make. The suspension is very well damped and very sporty - about the same as the "sport" setting on the active suspension on the volvo. The Aero academy is a big plus too. Volvo doesn't offer this for the R (but they do for the XC90 - go figure).
This post is getting long - I'm still up in the air - I'm leaning towards the V70r with the manual - but it changes daily.
