rear taillight intermittent failure

My 2000 wagon has an intermittent failure on the left rear taillight. When I pulled it out to inspect it, it seemed as if it was running very hot as the plastic base appeared slightly brown. Any ideas? the bulb works when I start it, but frequently goes out after 20 minutes.
