The clip which attaches the wind deflector's strut to the roof frame was replaced on my '03 last summer. No problems since, but given the number of problems this board has mentioned, I will be certain to make a warranty claim if it makes ANY noise. 50k miles are coming up awful quick.
The mechanic at Dirito Brothers here in Walnut Creek, CA said that in the past, he has "unhooked" one of the return springs on the strut where it attaches to the deflector. He's found it successful in lowering the stress on the strut's mounting clip and extending the life of his fixes (though he didn't do it to mine). He indicates the deflector still operates as intended, just with less spring force holding it up.
