I have a '99 9-5SE and have had the moonroof fixed twice. Both times, following the frequent cracking sounds several of you have heard, it locked halfway open (actually, half-way closed since both times it locked when I was trying to close it). Both times, I was able to get it fixed free under warranty. Now, however, the cracking sounds are starting again and the warranty period has expired. Almost afraid to open the window.
The cracking seems to occur most often during the summer or on hot days; the sound is similar to that of wood beams that expand and contract with the heat.
