Wife tested the Golf TDI and Cooper S. She invited me to comment on each during the decision process. I enjoyed the Cooper for around town, stop and go stuff. It was easy to park on the street (you'll probably garage in NYC?). On highway, it was not what we would want to drive for more than a few exits. Fuel economy wasn't great for size. It was loud and not real stable at 55+.
She decided to get the TDI. IMHO, keep your 9-5 unless you would be getting rid of it anyway. It is safe, great on highways, less attractive to theives, and is cross-functional (ie: seats adults and carries things.) But if you are looking for a go-cart -- that is the car!
