Today was the day I could easily have siezed up my engine.

After performing an oil change in my driveway this afternoon, The oil can light and hazard warning light started flashing about 1/4 mile down my street. I went another 1/4 mile to get to a turn around, and then drove directly home. .

I jacked the car back up and found oil sprayed all over the bottom of the engine. At first, the oil plug and filter seemed to be installed correctly, but when I removed the oil filter I found was that the rubber gasket from the old oil filter had separated from the filter body and stayed in the flange. So it didn't come off with the oil filter. So when I installed the new filter, there was an extra rubber gasket preventing it from sealing.

I've probably done 50 oil changes over the past 7 years and have never had this happen before.

I replaced the filter, and 3 1/2 quarts of Mobil 1. All seems fine with the car. But one thing is certain: From now on, I will examine every oil filter I remove from my vehicles to make sure the old rubber gasket comes off with it.
