Re: Why not replace pump/thermo/seals only upon failure? Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Why not replace pump/thermo/seals only upon failure?, Greg W, Mon, 17 May 2004 17:09:04 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
It's a tough decision and sell because of the price tag.
The seals are hidden behind the timing belt and I charge 1/2 hour extra to replace those together with the timing belt.
If they would start to leak before the next 60K interval it would be some 3 hours labor to replace. If the leak goes unattended it could damage the timing belt with catastrophic results.
At 120K I don't really think the seals will hold up another 60K.
The thermostat is a lot easier to access when the seals and timing belt are done and I charge 1/2 hour extra to do it together with those items since the coolant is already drained at the 120K service.
I don't expect the thermostat to last that much longer than 120K and if it fails the wrong way, the engine can be "cooked" with catastrophic results.
To do the thermmostat by its own it is about 3-4 hours in labor since the intake manifold has to be removed.
If the water pump is original and you flush the coolant system together with installing a new thermostat, you can bet your last dollar on that the W-pump will fail shortly thereafter due to Murphy's law, so therefore I want to replace that one too.
If it starts to leak on a long trip or the driver don't notice the leak it can have catastrophic results on the engine if overheated or the wallet if they are stranded in some forgotten town.
Some shops don't suggest preventative maintenance but skin the customer over and over when the car breaks down and they have to pay the full charge to have it repaired. I try to give them an option and let them know of things that are closely related and could be cost saving if done together.
