A xW30 does not always provide better MPGs than a xW40. There are journal bearings where classic viscocity losses rule. For cams and piston rings where the oil films are very thin, the better boundary lubrication of a thicker oil can reduce friction losts VS those of a xW30. And some of the heavier oils will also have better anti friction addatives which also help. So the net balance of friction losses is a balance of effects. Some have found better MPGs with xW40 oils VS xW30 oils. And a mature engine may very well need a heavier oil to work with the interal running clearances which increase with age.
